Antwerp's first-ever roof mural put on roof of AP High School

Artist Larsen Bervoets has created Antwerp's first-ever rooftop mural. The artwork on the roof of the AP High School's Spoor Noord campus is part of the Roofscape Landmark Project, a project now on display in six European cities.

In Antwerp, artist Larsen Bervoets has created Antwerp's first-ever roof mural on the AP High School campus Spoor Noord. It is the last site of six cities where Bervoets is creating a roof mural for the "Roofscape Landmark Project."

Bervoets is not an unknown painter. He has already painted murals for Antwerp, Ghent, Ostend and Kortrijk. He has also already collaborated with actor Matthias Schoenaerts on several street art projects, such as a tribute to Sanda Dia at Rock Werchter.

European Creative Rooftop Network

Larsen Bervoets was chosen from a selection of 18 artists from across Europe by the European Creative Rooftop Network (ECRN). His design "Roofscape Landmark Project" allowed him to create rooftop paintings in six European cities. The paintings can be found in Gothenburg, Chemnitz, Rotterdam, Faro, Nicosia and now Antwerp. For the project, he drew inspiration from the colors of the flags of the six participating countries. Each city has a variant with the same shapes and colors, but in a different composition.

AP High School

The roof of the AP High School was the ideal place for the artwork. Among other things, the new hospital ZNA Cadix and a housing block have a nice view of the painting. In addition, it is a rooftop terrace where AP High School students can have lunch and relax. The artwork was created not only for students, but also by students. The painting department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp collaborated with Bervoets for this project.

Bervoets is striving for this connection in the five other cities as well. In each city, there was a close collaboration with the residents who, like the students, were allowed to help color the basic design. Then they were able to paint their own idea within the artist's design. "Bringing people together and creating connection is an important element in this work," Bervoets said.
