Installation of RTJ gasket rings in the wrong flange groove

RTJ seals with the same ring number are interchangeable with one another in only one way. An oval ring fits both oval and modern flat grooves, but an octagonal ring fits only in modern flat grooves and cannot be used in older round grooves.

However, interchanging these ring types is strongly discouraged. RTJ flange connections are used in piping systems with high pressures and temperatures, and it is advisable to ALWAYS use the correct ring for the specific flange groove.
