Why can't ASME B16.5 and EN 1092⁃1 flanges be combined?

It is not recommended to use an ASME flange on one side and an EN flange on the other in a flanged connection.

Due to differences in bolt circle diameters and the number of bolts, proper alignment cannot be achieved; even if the flanges are tightened together with force, the connection will not seal properly.

It is therefore very important never to use different flange standards in a flange connection, but rather to use adapters between two different piping systems.

The most obvious solution, of course, is to take different flange standards into account during the design phase of a piping system.
