AWWA C200 Pipe Standard |
C200 Pipe Standard covers electrically butt-welded straight-seam, spiral-seam and seamless pipe with a nominal diameter of NPS 6 (150 mm) and larger for the transmission and distribution of water or for use in other water system facilities.
Inspection |
All work performed and all material supplied under this standard may be inspected by the purchaser, but such inspection shall not relieve the manufacturer of its responsibility to supply material and perform work in accordance with this standard. |
Quality Assurance |
The manufacturer must maintain a quality assurance program to ensure minimum standards are met. This includes a certified welding inspector who verifies that welders and welding procedures are qualified, and procedures are followed limiting testing and whether quality assurance functions are performed. |
Defects |
Repair of pipe defects is limited and must meet a number of criteria. Each length of pipe repaired must then be hydrostatically tested in accordance with standard requirements. |
Marking |
A serial number or other identifying features shall be painted on each pipe section and special pipe segment in a conspicuous place. |
Dimensions Tolerances |
Unless otherwise specified by the buyer, wall thickness and weight tolerances for welded pipes are determined by the requirements of the specifications from which the sheets or plates are ordered. The C200 standard describes all necessary data in detail. |
Materials
Pipes |
If the pipe is to be manufactured to ASTM specifications, the pipe grades below are to be applied:

Fabrication of Pipe
General Requirements |
Pipes produced in a pipe mill shall be inspected according to AWWA C-200 quality control procedures. These pipes shall be manufactured in accordance with the standard requirements of ASTM A-53, A-134, A-135 and A-139. |
Pipe Fabrication |
All spiral seams, longitudinal seams and circumferential seams used in the manufacture of the pipe shall be full penetration butt joints. The maximum radial offset tolerance on the plates depends on the thickness and is defined in the standard. |
Welding |
The procedures, welding operators and all welding staff shall be qualified according to Sec. IX, Part A, of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, or to AWS B2.1, or to another code mutually agreed upon between purchaser and manufacturer. |
Production weld tests |
The production welding tests consist of: two bending tests (inner bends and outer bends), two reduced-section tensile tests and a macro-crack test. Frequency of production welding tests: At least one set of weld test samples shall be taken from each size, grade and wall thickness of the work performed. |
Hydrostatic testing
Test pressure |
Each pipe length shall be tested by the manufacturer with a hydrostatic pressure test not less than that determined by the formula P= 2St/D. The standard specifies the calculation of this formula. |
