Is it possible to use A106 Grade B for low temperature service?
For low-temperature applications, you can use A106 Grade B, but under strict conditions. Without impact testing, the minimum design temperature of the metal is typically limited to -29 °C (-20 °F) for thicknesses of 9.53 mm (0.375 inches) or less. For colder applications, special specifications such as ASTM A333 Grade 6 (suitable for -45 °C) are required.
Impact tests determine the toughness of a material and its ability to absorb energy under sudden, rapid forces (shock loading). They reveal crucial properties, such as brittleness and the transition temperature from ductile to brittle, enabling engineers to select safe and durable materials for pipelines. The most widely used method to evaluate the impact resistance of metals, plastics, and composites is the Charpy test.
