Heineken is trying a Heat Battery to generate Steam for its brewing

Clay bricks that can hold thermal energy for days offer a new way to fuel the age-old process of making beer—and reduce emissions

When you’re cracking open a cold beer, you probably aren’t thinking about just how much heat breweries need to produce endless vats, bottles and cans of the stuff at commercial scale.

But Heineken does. The beverage giant is developing a new way to satisfy its demand for industrial heat to generate steam at its brewery near Lisbon—which requires clouds of heated water vapor during the beer-making process, from brewing to pasteurization.

The Dutch company is setting up large heat batteries made by thermal-storage startup Rondo Energy that convert wind and solar power into heat, and then store it in clay bricks at up to 1,500 degrees Celsius, holding the energy for days.
Heineken expects the project to be fully up and running by the first half of 2028, ready to gather power from a neighboring solar plant.
