‎‏Lens Shaped Ring Gaskets

Lens Shaped Ring Gaskets consist of a solid disc made of stainless steel or a special alloy and, unlike RTJ metal gaskets, are reusable because the sealing effect is generally achieved by elastic deformation of the surfaces.

These gaskets are usually found in flange connections of high-pressure equipment such as reactors, where working conditions are harsh and a perfect seal is required. Leaks can pose major risks to both employees and the environment.

In certain applications, the specification of a high-integrity metal gasket has typically led to the selection of the Lensring concept over the more commonly recognized RTJ solution. The Lensring is covered exclusively by the DIN 2696 specification. However, ASME B16.5 and other flange types can be modified to match the shape of a lens ring.

The lens ring features a metal gasket design with domed seating surfaces specifically designed to fit flange recesses. This provides the user with a high-quality metal-to-metal seal that can withstand high pressure and high temperatures.

As with all metal gaskets, the material of the lens ring must be softer than the material of the flange. This ensures that the applied pressure load leads to elastic/plastic deformation of the lens ring and not of the sealing surface of the flange. The distribution of high pressure loads leads to spreading of the gasket surfaces, thereby preventing overloading of the gasket.

In accordance with DIN 2696, materials are limited to a range of specified carbon steel and stainless steel grades, although alternative grades are available. The rings are also manufactured as blind rings, i.e. without an opening.
