What can you do if weld ends have unequal wall thicknesses?


When welding components with unequal wall thicknesses, the thicker part is chamfered to match the thinner pipe. ASME and other pipeline standards require specific internal and external tapered shapes (transitions) to prevent hazardous stress concentrations and cracking. Acceptable designs are described, for example, in ASME B31.8.
