Use of Pipe Cutters |
Pipe cutters are available in various sizes, and their use depends on the size, material type, and the situation in which they are to be used.
The best way to cut pipes and tubes is with a pipe cutter. This method guarantees a square, accurate, and fast cut. In practice, diameters up to 2 inches of steel pipe or steel tube are common, provided it has standard wall thicknesses.
The simplest type of pipe cutter is equipped with a single cutting wheel and two rollers that hold the cutter perpendicular to the pipe and roll around the circumference. Sufficient force creates a groove that gradually deepens until it cuts through the pipe wall. No metal is removed; it is simply displaced and pushed away by the cutter (cutting wheel).
For smaller pipe or tube diameters, very handy pipe cutters are available; consider copper or stainless steel tubing.
These pipe cutters are often used by instrument fitters for installing stainless steel air and control tubing. Pipe fitters often use copper tubing for steam tracing on larger pipes.
In both cases, the small pipe cutters are particularly suitable; see the image below.
