JIS G3452 Pipe Standard

Updated May 2026

JIS G3452 is one of the Japanese industrial standards for carbon steel pipes. It describes the pipes used in piping systems for the transport of steam, water, oil, gas, air, and other liquids, and are intended for low operating pressures.

JIS G3452 is primarily used for low-pressure applications such as plate heat exchangers, non-critical piping components, and narrative discussions of thermal design and stress analysis.
In addition, this standard can be applied to hot-dip galvanized pipes according to JIS G3445. In conjunction with JIS G3461, it can also be applied to pipe components such as boilers and high-pressure lines.
Finally, only the material strengths specified in this standard may be used for thermal design and stress analysis.

Steel grades of JIS G3452 pipes

JIS G3452 grade SGP is a Japanese industrial standardized material widely used in industrial applications. JIS G3452 SGP galvanized pipes are used, among other things, for the transmission of steam, water, oil, gas, and air at relatively moderate operating pressures.

Key features and applications of JIS G3452 SGP pipes

  1. Used for transporting water (not potable), air, steam, oil, gas, and other liquids at relatively low pressure.
  2. Plastic-lined steel pipes manufactured with the JIS G3452 SGP coating are used for water lines (carbon steel pipes are used for standard pipelines).
  3. Black and white pipes (two types) are available with an operating temperature range of -15 to 350°C.
  4. The corrosion-resistant ERW steel pipe of grade MZN is also available to protect the ERW steel pipe welds from corrosion caused by grooving.

The pipes are tested for tensile strength and elongation to ensure they meet the demands of various applications. With a minimum tensile strength of 30 N/mm² and an elongation of 25% to 30%, the pipes guarantee a long service life and resilience.

Manufacturing process for JIS G3452 SGP pipes

The manufacturing process for JIS G3452 SGP pipes begins with either electric resistance welding or butt welding, and once the pipes are manufactured, they are delivered as produced.
However, the cold-finished pipes undergo an additional annealing step after manufacturing. This annealing helps improve the strength and ductility of the pipes, making them less prone to breakage.

Both ends of pipes with a nominal diameter of 300 mm or less will be threaded or plain-ended. This ensures that the pipes can be securely connected to other pipes or fittings.

Pipes with a nominal diameter of 350 mm or more will only be manufactured with plain-ended pipes. This prevents leaks and other potential problems that can occur with threaded connections.

At the buyer's request, the pipes can also be supplied with beveled ends, allowing for butt welding.

Threaded pipes must have tapered threads on both ends in accordance with JIS B0203. A coupling in accordance with JIS B2301 or JIS B2302 must be able to be screwed into one end of the thread.

The other end, with a coupling that is not screwed in, must be fitted with a thread protector or protected by other suitable means. At the buyer's request, the threaded pipe can also be supplied without a coupling, but In all cases, tapered threads must be inspected in accordance with JIS B0253.

Before threading white pipes, the pipes and couplings must be galvanized. In this case, black pipes and couplings that have passed inspection are thoroughly cleaned by sandblasting, pickling, etc., and then hot⁃dip galvanized.

The zinc used for galvanizing is Class 1 distilled zinc ingot specified in JIS H2107 or a zinc ingot of at least equivalent quality. Other general aspects of the galvanizing must comply with JIS H8641. This is to ensure that all pipes are protected against corrosion and wear.

Hydrostatic testing / non⁃destructive testing of JIS G3452 SGP pipes

JIS G3452 Chapter 10.6 is used for testing the black SGP pipe, and the resulting hydrostatic or non⁃destructive testing properties must comply with this chapter. The choice of which method is preferred is determined by the purchaser's specifications or at the manufacturer's discretion.
